Specter Of The Past
By Timothy Zahn

A Review by Don J'Bar
Gad I hate cliffhangers. Well not really, it just makes me spend more money or visit the library more often. Either way, it looks like I am going to be busy again. This novel is worth it.
The novel is set about 10 years after Return of the Jedi. A time of peace has come over the galaxy, the Empire is reduced to a fleet of 150 Star Destroyers and the New Republic is flourishing. In fact, Admiral Pellaeon is talking to the remaining Moffs of the 1000 systems still under Imperial control about surrendering and ending the decades old war. Of course their is dissension amongst the Imperials over this, as many will not concede defeat, especially at the hands of "non - humans."
After the Moffs reluctantly agree with Pellaeon, he sets out to meet with General Bel Iblis of the New Republic and discuss terms of a peace agreement. However, not is all as it seems with the Empire either, and Moff Disra of Bastion especially. Seems he has a special "ally" at his disposal, one who he feels will bring the New Republic to its knees and so he sets the scenario in motion.
Meanwhile, at the site of Mount Tantiss, which is now a Noghri settlement, several datacards are uncovered and one contains a most startling revelation, that the Bothans were involved in the destruction of Caamas. Public outcries for justice surge through the New Republic and this document is used as an excuse to return to the petty bickering between neighbours that was seen during the times of the Old Republic. Rogue Squadron is called to duty often to settle ancient scores that have been lying dormant while the galaxy fought the reign of terror under Emperor Palpatine.
This sets the stage for Moff Disra's plan of personal gain and Imperial control of the galaxy. He sends agents out to incite riots againt the Bothan Clans, and several of our heroes, including Han and Leia Solo, become falsely accused of helping the Bothans and are even set up by Imperial agents as murderers during one of the riots.........
Awesome Fiction again by Mr. Zahn, one of the best known Expanded Universe writers. He weaves a compelling tale, that makes the reader not want to set the book down. My only complaint is the ending. I hate to be left with "to be concluded" and no plots resolved whatsoever. Why not make it all one book? It seems to be only a money grab in my opinion. And Lucas, and Zahn for that matter, are not wanting for money.
All in all, as Star Wars Fiction is concerned, a must read for fans. Gotta say 4 of 4 rebel Insignias for this one too.
Just my two credits. Don
