X-Wing : Book 4
The Bacta War

By Michael A. Stackpole
A Review By Don J'Bar

The fourth in what was supposed to be a 4 part series, the book was to be the culmination of Mike Stackpole's X-Wing series. However, the immense popularity of the series is such that there are now nine installments.

The book is set about 3 to 4 years after the Empire's defeat at Endor. Coruscant has been freed of the Empire's grip, and the New Republic has just set up shop there.

Rogue Squadron, under Wedge Antilles, have all resigned their posts in an effort to defeat Ysanne Isard, who has taken over the Empire's Forces and moved to the planet Thyferra, where Bacta is manufactured, enslaving the Vratix (the species that manufactures the Bacta) in the process. The Rogues know that there will be no end to the war with the Empire with her still on the loose.

They set up base on an abandoned space station, where they gather up the equipment needed to stage their war. Relying heavily on the "independent traders" Talon Karrde and Booster Terrik, they begin pirating Isard's Bacta shipments and giving the healing material to those unable to pay her exhorbitant prices.......

The plot is fast and furious from the get go, with space battles the norm - but what else do you expect from the likes of Rogue Squadron, right? We see the love blossoming between Corran Horn and Mirax Terrik (yeah, that's Booster's daughter alright) culminating in their marriage under unusual circumstances, and against the wishes of Booster.

If you like high speed , adrenaline pumping space combat, this novel, heck the entire series, is your cup of coffeine. Stackpole locks the S-Foils into attack position on the first page and doesn't shut 'em down until the final curtain calls for Rogue Squadron's worst enemy. Read this one folks, again worthwhile reading. I must give 3.5 of 4 Reb's for this one!!
