The New Jedi Order - Dark Journey

A review by Don J'Bar

Set Immediately after Star by Star, this novel continues the saga of Jaina Solo's escape from the ill-fated mission to Myrkrr, where her brothers have been captured by the Yuuzhan Vong. The Warmaster Tsavong Lah has learned that the Solos are twins, and this carries great religious meaning in their culture. He vows to capture them both, where they will be sacrificed to their Gods. Jaina, however, has escaped with a couple of her fellow Jedi aboard a Vong vessel. They head to Coruscant, not knowing of the recent events that have transpired there, and arrive to find the mass exodus of the populace.

In the turmoil, they run into Han and Leia, and follow them to safety. The information contained in the Yuuzhan Vong ship is invaluable to the war effort of the New Republic, and Jaina along with Lowbacca, her Wookie Jedi friend commence to unlock the secrets. Along the way there, a disturbance in the Force is felt, and the New Jedi feel the loss of another. Jaina lets the rage and anger overcome her, causing her to fall under the sway of the Dark Side. She vows revenge, and an unlikely ally comes out to lead her back to the light.....Who better than Kyp Durron, a once fallen Jedi to make here see the error of her ways is exactly what she needs.

This novel continues the bleak story of the struggle of the New Republic, and more importantly, the New Jedi Order of Luke Skywalker's. The losses of heroes in this war is staggering, and this novel is no exception in this matter. Still, I was left with a sense of something missing, confusion even, and I can't tell if it was intentional or not. If the reason for this is to make me want to read the next novel, it definitely succeeded - I can't hardly wait for it - watch for the review here soon.

I give this novel 3 of 4 Reb's, as I believe the author could have done a better job explaining a few things.

Just my two credits, Don
