Before Darth Maul’s appearance, few believed in the continued existence of the Sith. As mortal enemies of the Jedi, the Sith had waged an unholy war against the galaxy’s guardians of justice and peace during many millennia - almost bringing them to the point of defeat during numerous conflicts. The Sith were finally defeated in the battle of Ruusan… or so the Jedi had thought

“Always two there are…”
Following their defeat, only one Sith Master remained, Darth Bane. To preserve the order in secret, the dark lord decided that he would only take a single apprentice. Never again would there be more then two Sith Lords at one time, but members of the order continued expanding dark powers without the knowledge of the Jedi, waiting for the opportunity to seize control of the galaxy.

Over a millennium, the once-feared sith became almost forgotten, and many regarded them as little as a superstition. Their covert operations went unrecognised until Darth Maul and his master, the mysterious Sith Lord Darth Sidious revealed their influence during the Trade Federation’s invasion of the planet Naboo, which Sidious hoped to manipulate to bring about the fall of the galactic senate.

When the two Jedi ambassadors from the Galactic Republic, Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan learner Obi-Wan Kenobi, managed to rescue Queen Amidala of Naboo and escape from the planet, Lord Sidious sent his apprentice to hunt them down. Maul relished the task, as he has worked and trained all his life towards the day he would face a Jedi in combat, and he exulted in the challenge of being able to face two Jedi at the same time.
