The New Jedi Order : Star by Star

Omigod!!! That one word (sort of ) should just about sum up this monumental story. The galaxy far, far away is in serious peril at the hands of the invading Yuuzhan Vong, and Luke Skywalker and his band of Jedi Knights are the last hope for the citizens of the New Republic.

The Yuuhan Vong, under the Warmaster Tsavong Lah, have penetrated to the deep core of the galaxy and are threatening the core systems of Corellia and Coruscant. They have succeeded in genetically engineering a fearsome creature that hunts Jedi by finding them with the Force, and in usual Yuuzhan Vong style, there are plenty of nasty tricks up the creatures' sleeves. The creature is being cloned on the planet Myrrkr (known for its Ysalamiri, the only creature that can suppress the Force) which is deep behind Yuuzhan Vong lines. A group of Jedi, including the three Solo children, endeavour to go and destroy the "queen" before it manages to wipe out the new order of Jedi that have arisen from Luke Skywalker's Academy. The mission does not have much chance of success, but the three Solos', and a few of their Jedi pals must go anyhow. Not all of them will return......and the path to the Dark Side will entice our young heroes.....

Meanwhile, Luke and Mara have found a new base, and get support from the New Republic, albeit from an unlikely source, the Bothan president, Borsk Fey'lya, who has never been supportive of the Jedi in the past. The Jedi, in need of equipment and supplies accept his help, albeit grudgingly. At the secret base, the Jedi study their foes' weaknesses, and discover one, but will it come too late??????

Wow, this, the eighth in the series, is absolutely spellbinding. I could not put it it down and read until the wee hours of the night. It has been along time that a work of fiction has moved me like this one has. Troy Denning - you are the master! This, quite simply, is Space Opera at its finest. I can not say enough about it, and I don't really want to spoil it for you, but you will be moved to tears and then some with this one folks.

If I could, this one would rate higher than the 4 of 4 rebs, but that isn't possible, so there it lies folks. 4 of a possible 4.
