Rogue woke up slowly stretching her body like a cat. She was cramped from
sleeping in one position for so long. She raised her arms up above her head
and gave a
final stretch before crossing her arms on her chest. She frowned when she
felt her bare
skin.
Had she forgotten to put her gloves on? She looked over to her nightstand
to see if
she had left them there. That's when she saw him. Logan! He was asleep in one
of the
small chairs that Kitty insisted were dainty and refused to replace.
Her memory of the previous day rushed up and pounced on her. She gasped.
Remembering how Logan had found her in the front hall wrapped in Scott's
jacket.
Rogue closed her eyes. God Logan was gonna be all over her looking for
answers when
he finally woke up.
She did not want to be answering questions today. She'd rather just be
left alone.
Sighing she knew that was never gonna happen. She was going to have to face
the facts
and go with it. Like Hell, she would!
Rogue sat up carefully not wanting Logan or her roomies to wake up.
Although
with his hearing Logan should've already been up and growling at her already.
Frowning
she leaned close to him to see if he was faking sleep. But he was breathing
deeply and
evenly.
Well it was bad luck to look a gift horse in the mouth her momma had
always said
so she backed away. Going over to her dresser she took out some clothes and
went into
the bathroom to change. She looked into the mirror and was shocked to find
that she
hadn't changed a bit.
Well of course she hadn't she thought glaring at her reflection. It
wasn't like what
had happened had been monumental or anything. She didn't even know why it had
upset
her in the first place. It was so stupid. So she'd killed a plant so what.
Just one more thing
she knew she couldn't touch.
It was no big deal she told the girl in the mirror. Tears were forming in
the
reflection girl's eyes. Stop being weak she screamed silently at her image.
Your not weak
your strong. This was not going to break her.
For Christ's sake, she had been killed by Magneto and brought back by
Logan
and it hadn't affected her this much. What was wrong with her? She leaned
against the
sink trying to calm herself. She had to get out of here. If she had to talk
to anyone she
was gonna freak out on them.
She opened the bathroom door and looked to make sure everyone was still
asleep.
They were. She walked to the bedroom door and opened it wincing when it
squeaked.
She looked back but no one had woken up.
Walking down the hallway she made her way to the garage. She paused just
inside to open the key hutch and get the keys to the Lexus. What was it with
these people
and the letter X? She was reaching over to put the key in the car door when
the garage
door started to open up.
Running behind the Lexus, she crouched down. Who else would be up at 6:30
in
the morning? Oh God, don't let it be Jean. Looking around the back bumper,
she was
surprised to see Scoot rolling in a motorcycle.
Not just any motorcycle though. It was his baby. The one Logan had
'borrowed'.
Rogue knew probably better than anyone (maybe even Jean) how much the bike
meant to
him. He'd worked on it for five years restoring it with infinite care.
Because it reminded
him of his fathers bike.
She knew Scott was an orphan. His Father, Mother and little brother
having died
in a plane crash. She also knew he suffered from survivors guilt being the
only one to
have survived the plane crash. It was awful he and his brother sharing a
parachute. Scott
had held on to his little brother as long as he could but the parachute had
caught on fire
and he'd lost his grip.
She couldn't imagine what he must have gone through. She felt tears
burning at
the back of her eyes but refused to shed them. Scott had paid for surviving
though. He
wasn't able to control his power without his visor because of brain damage he
had
suffered from his impact with the ground.
How did she know all this you ask? She knew it because he had told her
one day
when he had found her crying outside under a tree by herself. He'd held her
and told her
he knew what it was like to lose something so precious as touch. Because he
had lost
color when he was seventeen. And he knew how hard it was to lose someone
because he
had lost both parents and a brother.
That's when she'd discovered she loved him. When she realized he cared
enough
to tell her so much about his past. Things he had not even told Jean. The
feeling that had
given her was beyond words. She had known then that she would give anything
to be
with him.
Scott rolled the bike past where she was crouching and then stopped. "You
might
as well come out Marie I know your there." He sounded tired.
Getting up from her crouch she stepped around in front of him so he could
see her
face. "How'd ya know Ah was there?" She asked.
"I always know when you're around me Marie. Always." The last was
spoken
with what sounded like resignation.
"Ah see ya got your bike back. So Ah guess ya already know Logan's back
huh."
She winced at the obviousness of her statement.
"Yes I know he's back. But frankly I don't care." He shoved the
kickstand
down
and moved over to his workbench to get a cloth. He then proceeded to start
cleaning his
bike as if his life depended on it.
"Would ya like some help sugah?" Rogue asked feeling stupid just
standing
there
yet not wanting to leave his presence.
Scott looked up at her and then down at her hand where the keys to the
Lexus
were still hanging. "Looks to me as if you were planning on going
somewhere
don't let
me stop you." His tone stung and she didn't know why he was mad at her.
"Are ya mad at me fer somethin' sugah?" She asked not sure if she
wanted
to
know what she had done to make him angry.
He let out a heavy sigh his head hanging. "No, Marie it's not you. It's
just I don't
know. Everything that's been happening lately. You know. And everybody
expects me to
be there to lean on. I don't know how much longer I can be their rock before
I crack." He
sounded so despondent that it made her heart ache to hear it.
"You don't always got ta be the fearless leader Scott. Why don't ya let
someone
else take over and give ya a break. Ah know Ororo has been wanting to give it
a try. Ah
heard her and Jean talking about it once." She didn't really know what she
was saying
she just wanted to help him.
He looked back up at her then. "Jean and Ororo were talking about Ororo
wanting
to be team leader. Jean never mentioned that to me. She hasn't told me a lot
of things it
seems." Even his anger sounded tired.
"Yeh well Ah could've just heard wrong." Rogue tried to cover
quickly.
"No, don't try and lie. No, lies between us Marie please." He looked
desperate. "I
need at least one person that I know I can trust to tell me the truth." He
grimaced. "I used
to think that person was Jean but I'm beginning to see that she's been lying
to me for a
long time." He threw the cloth down and grabbed Rogue's shoulders.
"Let's me and you go for a drive. Just the two of us. We could go to the
park and
talk. I need to ask you some things that have been on my mind driving me
crazy." He
looked so excited about it that she couldn't turn him down. As if she would
have ever.
"Suh sugah what ever ya want Ah'll follow ya anywhere." She knew she
sounded
like a fawning fool but she didn't care.
He took the car keys with a grin and opened her door for her before
sliding into
the drivers seat. He gunned the motor and peeled out of the garage leaving
the door open.
Rogue winced. People were bound to wake up now. Oh well. Looking at Scott's
face she
saw he got more relaxed the faster they went. She wasn't going to say 'slow
down' and
make him tense back up. Besides, the speed was kinda exciting.
Scott whipped the car around the corners with finesse. He could have
probably
been a racecar driver if he wanted to she realized. So many dreams were
ruined when one
found out they were a mutant.
He slowed down as they approached town. Only a rebel when the rules of
society
weren't staring him in the face. Rogue smiled at that thought. Scott was a
real stand up
kinda guy. He'd always be there for you when you needed him and she respected
that.
But he really needed to get out more and let loose. Being uptight, all the
time could not
be good for a person.
Scott pulled into the park and shut the motor off. He turned in his seat
to look at
her. They just sat there staring at each other for a while. Neither of them
were
uncomfortable. They never seemed to be no matter what the situation was.
Maybe that
was a clue that they were good for each other. Rogue didn't know.
Scott cleared his throat then and said. "I saw you in my jacket last
night." Rogue
closed her eyes not in embarrassment though. She felt calm and relaxed.
"Oh did ya then. What did ya think when ya saw me in your jacket?" She
asked
really wanting to know.
"I was really confused at first, well I still am kind of. But I woke up
this morning
and I realized that I wanted to know why you were in it. Why you looked like
you wanted
to fuse it to your skin. And if you might be feeling the same attraction to
me as I am
feeling towards you." He stopped to study her expression. She couldn't
stop
the shock
from passing over her face.
"I mean I know you aren't eighteen yet and I still haven't had a chance
to break it
off with Jean yet but I need to know what you are feeling." He looked so
hopeful that she
wanted to throw herself at him and kiss him senseless, despite her deadly
skin.
Instead, she just stared not really believing that she had heard him
right. "Ya
gonna break it off with Jean. For me. Ah don't understand Scott. Ah thought
ya loved
her." Her thoughts were swirling so fast she felt dizzy.
"I do love Jean. I think I always will but I can't ignore this thing
between us not
anymore. If I really loved Jean with all my heart, I wouldn't be feeling
this. But I do and
all I want to do is find out were it's going. Do you understand what I'm
trying to say
here?" Scott asked. Rogue felt disconnected from the whole situation. She
was
suddenly
being given everything she ever wanted and all she could do was stare at him.
Snap out of it girl! She shook her head. Seeing her head shake Scott's
face fell. "I
understand you probably think I'm to old for you huh. Or it was just my
imagination that
you wanted to be in my arms and not my jacket. You probably just felt cold
and grabbed
the first thing you could fin..." He was abruptly cut off as Rogue whipped
the scarf from
around her neck and held over his face so she could kiss him.
After his initial shock, Scott wrapped his arms around her and kissed her
back.
And it was the sweetest thing she had ever experienced. The feel of his lips
through the
silk was like a warm slice of heaven. Then she felt his tongue slip out and
wet the silk
over her lips making it stick to her. Her mouth opened up and his tongue
wrapped in silk
swept inside to parry with hers. She moaned at the soft scrap of his teeth on
her own as he
deepened the kiss. His arms tightened on her bringing her breasts flush
against his warm
hard chest.
She didn't think it could get any better but she was wrong. His right
hand came
around and slid up her side slowly making her whimper into his mouth. She
felt him
smile before his hand distracted her once more. He slid it to just underneath
her left
breast thumb swiping across the underside making her nipples tighten. Oh God,
he was
going to kill her with the suspense.
Move your damn hand Scott for God's sake man. She growled around his
tongue
making him chuckle. Then his hand was on her aching breast and she was
surprised that
she didn't go up in flames she was so hot. His hand curved around the aching
globe
wicked thumb flicking over her puckered nipple. She gasped and he swallowed
it
deepening the kiss even more. She was on fire she was going to go up in
flames she was
what the hell!?
Scott pushed away from her suddenly silk scarf clinging to his face. He
leaned his
head back against the seat back. The scarf fluttered wildly as his breath
panted out of his
heaving chest. Rogue was panting also. Her heart felt as if it might break
free of her chest
and fly away. Why had he stopped? Things had just been getting really good.
"Scott?" She wasn't quite sure what to say so she stuck with his
name.
She was
lucky to have remembered that since her brain seemed to be on the fritz.
He pulled the scarf from his face and turned his head to look at her.
Seeing her
flushed face he reached over and brushed her hair behind her ear. She leaned
into his
touch even through the leather gloves he felt good. His hand dropped back
into his lap.
Blowing out his breath, he said. "I'm sorry Marie I'm the adult here I
shouldn't
have let that happen." Shouldn't have let that happen? What was he talking
about she had
all but threw herself on him.
"Scott Ah wanted that to happen sugah. Ah wanted ya to know that Ah feel
the
same attraction ya feel. And that Ah was in your coat because Ah wanted to
feel close to
ya. Because Ah love ya. Ah have for a while now." She reached over and
brushed her
hand down his unshaven cheek.
He turned his head and brushed a kiss against the silk of her glove. "I
think I
might be falling in love with you too Marie and it scares me." He replied.
"What are
people going to say? I mean your underage and I feel like a dirty old man for
wanting you
like this." He sounded tortured and unsure.
"Sugah there ain't nothing wrong with the way we feel about each other.
And ya
ain't an old man dammit. Your only seven years older than me. Who cares what
other
people think Ah'll be eighteen in less than two months anyway. And it ain't
like we can
do anything Ah mean if we tried Ah'd kill ya." She concluded.
Scott laughed. "Marie your so naive darling. There are many ways to get
around
your mutation. I've been thinking about them all since yesterday and that's
what scares
me. I want you so much I don't think I can trust myself around you."
"Ah trust you enough for the both of us Scott. Ah know you won't do
anything
Ah don't want ya to. Stop torturing yourself. And start telling me about all
these little
fantasies you've been having." She grinned at him wickedly.
He smiled at her and put the scarf between them to kiss her again. Just a
soft
sweet short kiss. She purred against his lips. Making him chuckle.
"Maybe I'll tell you after your birthday." He told her. Then he
frowned.
"I don't
relish going back to the Mansion and telling everyone especially Jean."
"Then let's not." Rogue said.
"What do you mean Marie?" Scott asked.
"Let's just take off. Ya know on a road trip. Just the two of us and the
open road.
No one to ask questions or scold us. Just you and me." Rogue entreated.
"I don't think that would be such a good idea honey." Scott said
frowning.
"Don't think for once Scott just act. Ya said yourself that ya were
getting tired of
being everyone's protector. Let Ororo have that chance she wanted. Let's just
go." The
please went unsaid but her tone said it all.
And Scott smiled.
