God Dammit! Logan was seriously going to pay when he got back.
Scott
fumed. He was never going to be able to duplicate the
perfection
of his first bike. She had been a beauty. When he got her
back, He'd
probably be lucky is she was in one piece. He mused
feeling as
if Logan had stolen his baby and not his bike. He looked
at the
piece of junk in front of him and saw red (well he always saw
red but
that's not the point). He was contemplating all the ways he
could make the
Wild Man pay for his crime when he realized he was
being
watched.
Looking up he saw Marie. God she was
growing into a real beauty
he mused.
What was she now almost eighteen? He felt a smile sneak
onto his
usually stern face and wondered how just the site of her
seemed to
relax him so much. His smile wilted when he realized she
was not
smiling her sunny smile back. Looking more closely, damn his
glasses, he
noticed her lip quivering.
"What is it Marie? What's
happened?" He asked as he slowly got
up from his
kneeling position knees popping. Damn he felt old when
his knees
cracked like that. He walked towards her slowly knowing she
spooked
easily when she was upset.
"Ah killed Ororo's plant." she
sobbed. He felt as if he had been
gut
punched.
"Forget to water it?" He tried
to tease lightly knowing this was
a blow for
her self-confidence.
"No, Ah touched it and it
died," Her voice was so full of
remorse it
physically hurt him to hear it.
"Oh." Was all he could get out
past the lump in his
throat.
"Well it can't be helped now." He tried to placate her.
Reaching
out and squeezing her shoulder. She closed her eyes and he
wondered
for the millionth time since he had met her why anyone would
be afraid
to touch her. It was not like she would purposely hurt
anyone. She
was not like that.
He had always taken extra care to show
her that he was not
afraid to
touch her even if everyone else was. She was special and he
felt the need
to show her extra attention. He knew it was wrong to
treat her
different from the other students but he took pains to hide
his
affection for Marie from everyone else. He doubted even Jean with
their bond
knew how much he cared for the young woman.
"Don't worry about the plant
Marie." He told her. "I'll take you
into town
and you can buy Ro a new one."
Tugging on the shoulder he had yet to
release, he brought her
into a hug.
He was totally unprepared for the feelings that were
suddenly
bombarding his senses. Her arms wrapped around him and he
realized
for the first time that she definately had a lot of curves
and they
were all pressing into him. He quickly released her not
wanting her
to feel the evidence of his body's betrayal. What the
fuck was
going on with him! Since when did a young girl turn him on?
They
surrounded him every day for God's sake. Why was he becoming a
Letch all
of the sudden?
"Thanks, Scott. Ahe'd like that very
much." She said breaking
into my
turbulent thoughts. He looked down at her seeing the
happiness
in her expression. If he had not known before he knew now
that a trip
to town alone with her was out of the question. At least
until he
could calm himself down. He had to think fast and get
himself out
of this bind.
Ah Jean. Marie did not try to hide her
distste for his
lover.
"It's no problem. I was going to take Jean in to get groceries
anyway."
he lied smoothly. There it was the expression of disgust
passed over
Marie's face. It was an expression he had seen often
since Logan
had left. It was a cross between the look you gave your
shoe when
you stepped in something and pure distaste. He felt kind of
bad about
lying but desperate times called for desperate measures.
"Maybe Ah'll take a rain check on
that trip to town sugah." She
looked
disappointed and he wondered if maybe his new feelngs were
mirrored by
her. No, he would not think about it Damn it. That would
just
complicate things and he was already confused enough.
He was about to try and cheer her up when
Jean suddenly
intruded.
"There you are Rogue. Ororo told me about the incident in
the
greenhouse. That is something that even I could not have
anticipated."
He winced hearing the superiority in her tone. Glancing
at
Marie,(the damn glasses came in handy sometimes) he realized she
was looking
at him. No, staring was more like it. A goofy smile took
over his
face before he could stop it. Guess that answered the
question of
her feelings toward him. The look in her eyes was
smoldering
he could see that even through the old ruby quartz shades.
He realized Jean had stopped talking and
looked at her she was
looking
between him and Marie an expression of dawning comprehension
widening
her eyes. Then suddenly she was pissed. He had never seen
that look
on her face before and it was directed at Marie.
"May I speak with you Rogue?"
It was more demand than question
even he
could tell that.
"Suh." Marie said resignation
clear in her voice. She followed
Jean out of
the garage. Leaving him behind to muse privately over the
events of
the past couple of minutes.
He was embarrassed to note he was more
concerned with his new
discovery
than Marie's. It must have nearly broken her to find out
that she
could not touch ANY living thing without killing it. Yet, all
thoughts of
Marie's problem were forgotten as he remembered his own
little
discovery. He now realized that it had not just happened.
Every
minute since he had first seen her had led up to his moment of
discovery.
He was disconcerted to find that yes, he
had just been waiting
for her to
grow up a little before he could allow himself to be
attracted
to her. Why was he attracted to her when he had Jean? He
had been in
love with Jean since he had first set eyes on her. So,
why then
was he now feeling a pull toward Marie?
*Scott* The Professors voice in his mind
startled him out of his
musings.
*Yes, Professor. Is there a problem?* He
thought back at him.
*You could say that yes.* The Prof
sounded amused.*You are
projecting
a great deal of anxiety and confusion. Would you like to
talk about
it? If not would you be so kind as to keep it down. I am
starting to
get a headache.* This time there was a definite mirth in
his tone.
*I think maybe I would like to talk.*
Scott responded.
*I am in the Library. I will wait for
your arrival.* Scott felt
the
connection severe.
Damn again. he had not realized he had
been projecting. The
Professors
amusement made him wonder just how much he had been
projecting.
Oh, God. Had Jean heard any of his thoughts? He hoped not
or else he
would be on the receiving end of one of her lectures.
Wincing he
made his way to the Library.
Two doors down Jean slowly came out of
the Study. Carefully
shutting
the door after her. As if she would have liked to slam it.
She headed
upstairs without noticing him.
Raeching for the Library door, he was
stopped short when Marie
came out of
the Study. She did slam the door making the wood shudder.
She looked
up and down the hall and again he seemed to be overlooked.
Then she
headed for the Girls Hall.
Frowning now he finally made it into the
Library. Finding the
Professor
sitting beside the empty fireplace. He could have been
wrong but
he thought he saw the older mans shoulder's shaking
sligtly.
Then the Professor turned his wheelchair and his face was
devoid of
expression.
"I am glad you decided to talk with me Scott." he spoke
quietly.
"I know you will not pass judgment
on me for what I am feeling."
Scott said
simply.
The Professor said nothing further only
motioning toward a
chair. Scott
sat and began to tell the Professor about his most
enlightening
day.
Several hours later and no closer to
understanding his current
fix, he
left the Library heading upstairs hoping to talk to Jean. Not
about his
new found feelings for Marie but about her conversation
with the
girl. There had to have been harsh words for Marie to be
that angry.
However, Jean was not in their room. He
sat on the bed and
suddenly
felt very tired. Lying down he fell asleep almost before his
head hit the
pillow.
He awoke with a start some time later
when he reached across the
bed and did
not find the warm flesh he had been going for. Instead,
he found
the bed cold and empty beside him. Rolling over he looked at
the bedside
clock. He groaned aloud when he read the time. 1:30 a.m.
Where could
she be?
He decided to get up and try to find her.
Walking downstairs, he
heard a
door open up. He glanced around the corner and into the front
hall. What
he saw only compounded his confusion. Marie was wrapped in
his leather
jacket hugging herself.
She started suddenly and whirled around
hands out and he
realized
she was not wearing gloves. Looking down he saw she was
barefoot
also. Curious to find out what had starled her he leaned
farther
around the corner. Then he saw him. Logan. He almost choked.
What was he
doing here? Did he think he could be gone almost a year
and then
just walk in and be welcome. However, he restrained himself
when he
heard Logan speak.
"Hold up darlin'." Logan spoke
in a gruff whisper.
"Logan?" Marie asked sounding
unbelieving.
"Yeh, it's me Marie." Hearing
him speak her name made Scott's
stomach
cramp. How dare he. Logan had hurt her when he left and now
he was
acting like they were still friends. Logan stepped forward and
Scott saw
he had not changed one bit despite his lengthy absence.
"What you doing with Scottie's coat
darlin'?" Scott felt the
need to say
something about the nickname and the use of the word
darlin'.
However, he wanted to know the answer to that question also.
But Marie did not say a word she just
burst into tears. Logan
opened his
arms before Scott could even offer his own and she ran
into them.
It hurt and Scott must have made a sound of pain because
Logan was
suddenly staring at him over Marie's shoulder.
It was not a nice look. In fact, it
looked as if the Wild Man
would have
liked to eviscerate him. Glaring back at the other man
Scott
turned and left not wanting Marie to know yet that he had seen
her wrapped
in his jacket. The picture of her standing there wrapped
in it like
she wanted to fuse it to her skin had been a shock.
He walked back upstairs trying to process
everything. It was
impossible his
mind was to turbulent. He decided it could wait till
morning.
Lying down once more he wondered again, where Jean was then
he was
asleep.
