Scott Summers was the older of the two sons of Major Christopher Summers, a test pilot in the US Air Force. When Scott was a child, Major Summers flew himself, his wife Katherine, and his sons Scott and Alex back from a vacation in his vintage private plane. The plane was attacked and set ablaze by a scout ship from the alien Shi'ar Empire. Katherine pushed Scott and Alex out the plane door with the only available parachute. The parachute was unable to slow their fall sufficiently to prevent Scott from suffering a head injury on landing. (The injury damaged the part of Scott's brain that would have enabled him to control his optic blasts.)
History: Scott Summers was only a child when his mother pushed him and his brother, Alex, strapped on him, out of their plane to escape death at the hands of an alien space craft. The parachute he had caught on fire and only because his mutant powers kicked in and he slowed their descent, they survived. Cyclops went from orphanage, to orphanage, always being returned by would-be parents after seeing his mutant power. He landed in an orphanage led by Mr. Sinister. As a teenager, Scott began to suffer from severe headaches and eyestrain and a doctor gave him his red shades. Scott ran away from there, lived on the streets, was taken in by Jack who beat and abused him until eventually, he was taken in by Prof. Xavier, and became the first X-Man. He fell in love with Jean Grey as they both fought as the original X-men (Hank, Bobby, Warren, Scott and Jean). Scott meets his younger brother, Alex, for the first time as Alex was adopted into a loving family (UXM 54) During a trip to space Jean was about to die. The Phoenix force offered her life. She accepted and the Phoenix is born (UXM 101). Scott meets Corsair for the first time (UXM 104). The Phoenix took over as Jean Grey while the real Jean lay in a cartoon at the button of the sea. The Phoenix couldn’t handle all the new emotions and turned evil, destroying a whole planet. She finally killed herself on the moon (UXM 137). Scott leaves the team (UXM 138). Madelyne Pryor is introduced, looking exactly like Jean Grey (UXM 158). Scott and Madelyne are married; making this the shortest romance in Marvel history who almost never let people marry and if they do chances are one of them ends up dead or the marriage turns out to never have happened (UXM 175). Scott and Maddie`s first child, Nathan Christopher Summers, is born (UXM 200). Jean shows up again, she was never really dead (Factor X, 1). Scott joins Jean, Hank, Bobby and Warren as the leader of “X Factor”. Madelyne seemly dies but then becomes the Goblin Queen, wanting to kill everything and bring hell to Earth (literally), she is killed in the end (X- factor 39). Nathan is infected with a deadly virus and Scott is forced to send him to the future (X- factor 68). Scott and Jean marry (X-men 30). Nathan returns to this time as Cable. During Operation: Zero Tolerance, Scott is seriously wounded. Dr. Cecilia Reyes saves his life. He leaves the X-men with Jean. While he is away the whole “Gambit’s trial” occurs [and Ororo seems to be just fine with it! Strange…]. Scott and Jean eventually returns to the mansion only to have Scott sacrifice himself for Nate Grey (his son from the AoA universe) and merged with Apocalypse instead during the final battle with Apocalypse. Still convinced that there was some part of Scott alive inside Apocalypse Jean set off with Cable in search of him [The Search For Cyclops]. Cyclops and Apocalypse were eventually separated and Apocalypse was killed. Scott returned to the team. His relationship with Jean is getting still worse since the separation from Apocalypse, no small thanks to Logan who seems to be going very clearly after Jean. But then maybe this is Ororo`s and Scott`s chance to be together…………
